Bizi Mondays: Real-Time Race Tracker

A couple of weeks ago, I ran a half-marathon. I have run a few other long-distance races and have come to enjoy them quite a bit. One of the aspects of the experience that is still lagging is the spectator side and their connection with the runner. As a spectator, I have followed other people throughout their races; it’s a strange activity, but knowing how hard an effort it is, makes me admire and want to follow whoever is doing it. But the experience is limited to only watching an estimate of where they are on a map.

As a runner, sometimes you need a dose of energy, and family members can provide that. Also, you want to feel like they are following you and keeping track of your progress. That’s where the idea of Race-Follow comes in.

Inspiration

Inspiration 1: Beacon by Strava

Strava’s Beacon is a feature that allows users to share their location with a select group of contacts during a run or ride. This way, friends and family can track their progress in real-time and be notified when they finish. This feature could be adapted for race events, allowing spectators to follow multiple runners and receive notifications when they reach certain checkpoints or finish the race.

Inspiration 2: Live Streaming Services

Live streaming services, such as Twitch, YouTube Live, and Facebook Live, have become increasingly popular for real-time broadcasting events. These platforms allow for various interactive features, such as chat rooms and Q&A sessions, which can enhance the viewer experience and create a sense of community among remote participants.

Inspiration 3: Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence can be used to identify each runner and curate personalized streams for their family members. Matching AI-powered face and body recognition with GPS, the platform could track each runner’s progress along the course and capture footage of them crossing the finish line. The platform can then use this footage to create personalized videos for each runner’s family members, highlighting their race for the runner to share.

Current State: Map Tracking

Currently, most races offer map tracking as the only way for spectators to follow a runner’s progress. However, this method has limitations, as it only provides an estimated location and doesn’t offer real-time updates.

Solution: Real-Time Race Tracker

Introducing Real-Time Race Tracker, a platform that allows family members and friends to watch their loved ones running a race in real-time. Runners can pay a fee to enable their family members to watch them live, and the platform will use GPS technology and AI-powered face and body recognition to track their progress and provide real-time updates. The platform can also include features like personalized messages of encouragement, live chat, and social media integration to enhance the spectator experience.

With Real-Time Race Tracker, spectators can feel connected to the race and their loved ones, even if they can’t be there in person. The platform can be a valuable tool for runners, providing them with the support they need to push through and complete the race.

Closing Thoughts

Real-Time Race Tracker has the potential to revolutionize the spectator experience for long-distance races, providing a more engaging and personalized experience for family members and friends. By leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, Race-Follow can identify each runner and curate customized content for their family members, creating a unique and memorable viewing experience.
